Leading Reddit: A Stance on Free Speech

After leaving Facebook, Wong became an active user of Reddit, the popular social news aggregation, content rating, and discussion website. His engagement with the platform eventually led to a significant career opportunity. In late 2011, after several months of discussions, Wong was offered the position of CEO of Reddit. He humorously noted that his friends met this news with "uproarious laughter," perhaps reflecting the challenging nature of leading such a unique and often controversial online community.

Wong officially took the helm as Reddit's CEO in March 2012. His tenure was marked by a strong commitment to the platform's founding principles of free speech, even when confronted with highly objectionable content. In 2012, addressing concerns about various controversial communities on Reddit, Wong famously stated, "We will not ban legal content even if we find it odious or if we personally condemn it." This policy became a cornerstone of Reddit's content moderation approach under his leadership, emphasizing the platform's role as a neutral host for diverse, albeit sometimes unsavory, discussions. This stance, while upholding a principle of open discourse, also brought significant challenges and criticism regarding the platform's responsibility for harmful content.

During his time as CEO, Wong also made key personnel decisions, notably hiring Ellen Pao as the Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships in 2013. He later recommended her as his successor for the CEO role, a decision that would have significant repercussions for Reddit's future leadership and public image. Wong's leadership saw Reddit continue its rapid growth, solidifying its position as a major hub for internet culture and community interaction, even as it grappled with the complexities of managing a vast, user-generated content ecosystem.

Resignation from Reddit and Subsequent Ventures

Wong's tenure as Reddit CEO concluded in November 2014, when he resigned from the position. The immediate catalyst for his departure, as announced by Reddit board member and YC president Sam Altman, was a disagreement over a proposal to relocate Reddit's office from San Francisco to Daly City. Wong believed a move to a less expensive area would benefit newer employees, but the board did not support the idea. Reportedly, Wong "stopped showing up at the office" when his proposal was ignored, indicating a deep frustration with the situation. Wong himself later stated that he had been considering leaving due to immense stress even before this particular disagreement, highlighting the intense pressures of leading a platform like Reddit.

Following his departure from Reddit, Wong continued his entrepreneurial activities. He co-founded Sunfire Offices with Niniane Wang, establishing a coworking space in Mountain View, California.
