The Triple Alliance (World War I)

The Triple Alliance was a secret defensive military pact formed in 1882 between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Designed to maintain a balance of power and isolate France, it became one of the two major alliance systems in Europe leading up to World War I. However, Italy's shifting loyalties and internal conflicts ultimately led to its neutrality and eventual defection to the Allied Powers in 1915.
