The Holocaust, also known as the Shoah, was the systematic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators during World War II. It was a genocide driven by extreme antisemitism and racial ideology, leading to the extermination of approximately two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population through mass shootings, gas chambers, and other brutal methods.
