The Supreme Leader of Iran is the highest political and religious authority in the country, responsible for delineating general policies, supervising the execution of these policies, and resolving conflicts between government branches. The office was established in 1979, pursuant to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's concept of the Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist. The Supreme Leader is elected by the Assembly of Experts and serves for life.
