The Supreme Leader of Iran is the highest political and religious authority in the Islamic Republic, with power over the military, judiciary, media, and key government bodies. Established after the 1979 revolution, the position is a lifetime appointment based on the concept of Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist. Three individuals have held the role: Ruhollah Khomeini, Ali Khamenei, and Mojtaba Khamenei.
