Saddam Hussein was the fifth president of Iraq, ruling from 1979 until his overthrow in 2003. He led Iraq through the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, and a brutal dictatorship marked by repression and human rights abuses. His regime ended with the US-led invasion of Iraq, and he was executed in 2006 after being convicted of crimes against humanity.
