Romulus Augustulus was the last Western Roman Emperor, reigning briefly from 475 to 476 CE. His deposition by the barbarian general Odoacer is traditionally seen as the end of the Western Roman Empire and a symbolic marker for the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Despite his grand name, he was a young figurehead with no real power.
