The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most influential states in ancient history, dominating the Mediterranean and much of Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. It began with the rule of Augustus in 27 BC and lasted for centuries, shaping language, law, religion, and culture across its territories. The Western Empire fell in 476 AD, while the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire continued until 1453.
