Pliny the Elder

Pliny the Elder was a Roman scholar, author, and military commander best known for his monumental work, *Naturalis Historia*. This encyclopedic text compiled nearly all ancient knowledge about the natural world, becoming a foundational scientific reference for centuries. He famously died while observing and attempting to rescue people during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
