What Were the October 7 Attacks?

The October 7 attacks were a coordinated armed assault on Israel carried out by Hamas and several allied Palestinian militant groups on October 7, 2023. The assault began at around 6:30 a.m. with a massive rocket barrage and quickly escalated into ground, vehicle, and motorized paraglider incursions across the Gaza–Israel border. It took place on Simchat Torah, the final day of the Jewish High Holy Days, when many communities near the border were observing the holiday. Within hours, militants had overrun military outposts, breached the border fence in dozens of places, and entered more than 20 Israeli communities and towns.

The attacks killed approximately 1,195 people, the overwhelming majority of them civilians. Among the dead were at least 828 civilians, including 36 children and 71 foreign nationals, along with at least 367 members of Israeli security forces. Roughly 364 civilians were killed at the Nova music festival near Re'im, where thousands of young people had gathered for an overnight dance event. Another 251 people — soldiers and civilians, Israeli and non-Israeli — were seized and taken into Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust, and the bloodiest day in Israel's history.

Hamas codenamed the operation Al-Aqsa Flood. In Israel, the day is often called Black Saturday or the Simchat Torah Massacre. Internationally, it is most commonly known as the October 7 attacks. The assault was the first large-scale invasion of Israeli territory since the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, and it shattered long-held assumptions about Israel's border security and intelligence capabilities. Israel declared war the following day and launched a large-scale military campaign in Gaza that has continued since.

The attacks drew near-universal international attention. The governments of 44 countries formally denounced the assault and described it as terrorism. Some Arab and Muslim-majority governments instead pointed to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and the blockade of Gaza as the root cause. The events of that day reshaped Middle East politics, triggered a war that has killed tens of thousands, and reignited global debates over occupation, resistance, and the laws of war.

How the Attack Unfolded

The operation opened with a rocket barrage of at least 4,300 projectiles fired at Israeli towns, cities, and military positions, intended to overwhelm air defenses and force civilians into shelters. Under cover of the rockets, Hamas fighters crossed the border using explosives to breach the fence, trucks, motorcycles, and motorized paragliders. The paragliders allowed militants to bypass ground defenses and land near communities and military bases. The coordinated timing — during a holiday, in the early morning — caught Israeli forces largely off guard.

Once inside Israel, militants moved through the Gaza envelope, a strip of Israeli communities closest to the border. They attacked the Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings, several military bases including the Gaza Division headquarters at Re'im, and civilian towns and kibbutzim. At the Nova music festival, thousands of attendees were trapped in open ground with few escape routes; 364 were killed and many others wounded or taken hostage. In communities like Be'eri and Kfar Aza, militants went house to house, killing residents and abducting others. The assault lasted for many hours before Israeli forces regained control of the area.

The scale of the breach was extraordinary. According to an IDF report, around 6,000 Gazans crossed into Israel through 119 separate breach points, including 3,800 members of the Nukhba elite units and 2,200 civilians and other militants. An additional 1,000 Gazans fired rockets from inside the Strip, bringing the total number of participants on Hamas's side to roughly 7,000. The attack demonstrated a level of operational planning, training, and coordination that Israeli intelligence had not anticipated.

The Human Toll and Hostages

The human cost was staggering. Of the roughly 1,195 killed, at least 828 were civilians, including 36 children and 71 foreign nationals from countries such as the United States, Thailand, Nepal, and the United Kingdom. At least 367 members of Israel's security forces died, many in the initial fighting at military bases and border posts. The Nova festival alone accounted for 364 civilian deaths, making it one of the deadliest single-site attacks in Israel's history. Thousands more were wounded.

Hamas and other groups took 251 hostages into Gaza — a mix of Israeli civilians, soldiers, and foreign nationals, ranging from infants to elderly people. The hostage crisis became one of the defining features of the ensuing war, with families and international mediators pressing for releases. A series of negotiated exchanges, most notably a week-long truce in November 2023, saw some hostages freed in return for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Others were rescued by Israeli forces, some were killed in captivity, and many remained unaccounted for long after.

Reports also emerged of widespread sexual violence during the attacks. Israeli investigators and international human rights groups documented dozens of cases of rape and sexual assault, based on witness testimony, forensic evidence, and survivor accounts. Hamas officials denied that their fighters carried out such acts. The allegations became a subject of intense international debate and investigation. Separately, at least 14 Israeli civilians were killed by the IDF's own use of the Hannibal Directive, a controversial protocol intended to prevent soldiers from being captured, which in some cases led to Israeli fire hitting civilians.

Why Hamas Launched the Attack

Hamas officials framed the operation as a response to decades of Israeli occupation, the blockade of Gaza, the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, settler violence against Palestinians, and recent escalations around the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. They said the goal was to revive the Palestinian cause, break the regional status quo, and induce a wider conflict. The name "Al-Aqsa Flood" tied the operation to the contested holy site, which is a recurring flashpoint in the conflict.

Experts disagree on Hamas's ultimate objectives. Some analysts argue the group sought to derail normalization talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia and to force the Palestinian issue back to the center of regional politics. Others believe Hamas aimed to trigger a massive Israeli response that would isolate Israel internationally and ignite a broader confrontation. A further view holds that Hamas sought to establish a Palestinian state along 1967 borders, while others contend it still seeks Israel's destruction. Hamas's 2017 charter removed some antisemitic language and shifted its stated focus from Jews to Zionists, but its armed wing has continued to pursue violent resistance.

Background and History

The roots of the October 7 attacks lie in the long conflict over the Palestinian territories. Israel has occupied the Gaza Strip, along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem, since the Six-Day War in 1967. In 2005, Israel unilaterally disengaged from Gaza, dismantling all 21 Israeli settlements there. However, Israel maintained tight restrictions on the movement of people and goods, citing the need to prevent weapons smuggling and to pressure Hamas. Most international bodies, including the United Nations and the International Court of Justice, continue to regard Gaza as occupied territory, while Israel and some scholars dispute that classification.

Hamas was founded in 1987 as a Palestinian nationalist Islamist movement and is the largest Islamist group in the Palestinian territories. It has carried out numerous suicide bombings and rocket attacks against Israeli civilians, and countries including the United States, the European Union, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom designate it as a terrorist organization. In 2006, Hamas won Palestinian legislative elections, and in 2007 it took control of Gaza after a violent split with Fatah. Israel and Egypt then imposed a blockade on the Strip, which has shaped Gaza's economy and living conditions ever since.

In the years before the attack, tensions steadily escalated. Throughout 2023, settler attacks displaced hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank. In April, clashes erupted around the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. In May, fighting broke out between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. By September, The Washington Post described Israel and Hamas as "on the brink of war." On September 13, five Palestinians were killed at the border, and Israel halted all exports from Gaza after saying it found explosives in a shipment. Hamas put its forces on high alert and openly practiced storming Israeli settlements. On September 29, Qatar, the UN, and Egypt mediated a de-escalation agreement, and about 17,000 Gazans held work permits in Israel.

There were also warnings. Saudi Arabia and Egypt both said they cautioned Israel that an "explosion" was coming. Egypt claimed it warned Israel days in advance that a major escalation was imminent; Israel denied receiving such a warning, though US Representative Michael McCaul said warnings were given three days before. According to Haaretz, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was warned in a September 2023 phone call with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan about a Hamas plot. Netanyahu denied the report and threatened legal action. Israeli defense officials had also warned that political upheaval over judicial reforms signaled vulnerability, while the same apparatus had ignored its own detection of Hamas's "Walls of Jericho" mass-invasion plan a year earlier.

Operationally, Hamas spent two years preparing. It used hardwired phone lines inside Gaza's tunnel network, nicknamed the "Gaza metro," to communicate covertly and evade Israeli surveillance. In the months before the attack, Hamas publicly released videos of militants training to take hostages and practicing paragliding — signals that, in hindsight, pointed directly to the tactics used on October 7. The combination of meticulous planning, intelligence failures, and a distracted Israeli leadership produced the conditions for the deadliest day in Israel's history.

Why It Matters

The October 7 attacks triggered the Gaza war, one of the most destructive conflicts in the region's modern history. Israel's military response has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, displaced most of Gaza's population, and reduced much of the territory to rubble. The war has drawn in regional actors, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, and has repeatedly threatened to escalate into a wider Middle East conflict. It has also strained Israel's international standing and prompted proceedings at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.

The attacks shattered assumptions on multiple sides. In Israel, the failure of intelligence and military readiness led to intense domestic recrimination and demands for accountability. The hostage crisis divided Israeli society and complicated military decision-making. Globally, the events reignited debates over occupation, resistance, terrorism, and the laws of war, and they reshaped diplomacy across the Middle East, freezing normalization talks between Israel and Saudi Arabia and pushing the Palestinian question back to the center of international attention.

For students of history and international relations, October 7 stands as a case study in how surprise attacks, intelligence failures, and unresolved conflicts can cascade into prolonged war. It also illustrates how the same event can be framed in radically different ways depending on perspective — as terrorism, as resistance, as genocide, or as a turning point. Understanding the facts, the context, and the competing narratives is essential to making sense of the conflict that followed and the world it continues to shape.
