How It Works

To overcome it, nuclei must be moving at extremely high speeds, which means they need to be incredibly hot. This is why fusion reactions are often called thermonuclear fusion. "Thermo" refers to heat, and "nuclear" refers to the atomic nuclei. The most accessible and efficient fuels are isotopes of hydrogen: deuterium and tritium. Deuterium is naturally abundant in seawater, making it a virtually limitless resource. Tritium, however, is radioactive and rare on Earth. It has a half-life of about 12.3 years. For practical fusion reactors, tritium would need to be "bred" within the reactor itself, typically by bombarding lithium with the neutrons produced during the D-T fusion reaction. This creates a closed fuel cycle, where the reactor produces its own tritium. Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is essential for fusion. It's a superheated gas where electrons have been stripped from their atoms, creating a soup of free-moving ions and electrons. Because plasma is electrically charged, it can be manipulated by magnetic fields. Current Research and Future
