The Italian Social Republic (RSI), also known as the Republic of Salò, was a German puppet state established in German-occupied Italy during the final years of <a href="/article/world-war-ii">World War II</a>. Led by <a href="/article/benito-mussolini">Benito Mussolini</a> after his rescue by German forces, it represented the last, desperate incarnation of Italian Fascism, heavily reliant on Nazi Germany for its existence and control. It was a collaborationist regime that sparked a brutal civil war within Italy until its collapse in May 1945.
