The International Committee of the Red Cross is a Geneva-based humanitarian organization that protects victims of armed conflict and promotes the laws of war. Founded in 1863 after a Swiss businessman witnessed the horrors of the Battle of Solferino, it has won the Nobel Peace Prize three times. Today it operates in war zones worldwide, visiting prisoners, treating the wounded, and reminding armies that even war has limits.
