George F. Kennan: The Diplomat Who Designed Containment

George F. Kennan was an American diplomat and historian whose 1946 "Long Telegram" and 1947 article "The Sources of Soviet Conduct" gave the United States its defining Cold War strategy: containment of Soviet expansion. He helped build the Marshall Plan and other key institutions, then spent the rest of his long life criticizing the militarized direction American foreign policy took. He died in 2005 at age 101, one of the last of the "Wise Men."
