Etruscan was the language of the ancient Etruscan civilization in what is now Italy, spoken from around 700 BCE until its eventual replacement by Latin by the 1st century CE. Though its alphabet is derived from Greek, and it can be phonetically read, much of its meaning remains a mystery to modern scholars. It stands as a unique linguistic puzzle, being a non-Indo-European language in ancient Europe.
