The dowitcher is a medium-sized, long-billed wading bird that belongs to the genus Limnodromus, characterized by its distinctive body and bill shape, as well as its migratory behavior. There are three species of dowitchers, with two found in North America and one in Asia. The dowitcher's name originates from the Iroquois language, and its taxonomy was first introduced by Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied in 1833.
