The Constitutional Council is France's highest constitutional authority, established in 1958 to ensure laws and government actions comply with the Constitution. It reviews legislation before it's enacted and, since 2010, can also review existing laws if challenged by citizens, safeguarding fundamental rights and the balance of power.
