Constantinople was the magnificent capital of the Roman and later the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years, founded by Emperor Constantine I in 330 CE. Strategically located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, it became a global center of wealth, culture, and power until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in 1453, after which it became known as Istanbul.
