Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a powerful Frankish king who united much of Western and Central Europe during the early Middle Ages. Crowned Emperor by the Pope in 800 CE, he laid foundations for what would become the Holy Roman Empire and initiated a period of cultural revival known as the Carolingian Renaissance. His reign profoundly shaped the political, religious, and cultural landscape of Europe for centuries to come.
