The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was the contingent of the British Army sent to France at the start of the <a href="/article/second-world-war">Second World War</a>. Formed in September 1939, it played a crucial role in the early stages of the <a href="/article/battle-of-france">Battle of France</a> before being largely evacuated from <a href="/article/dunkirk">Dunkirk</a> in May-June 1940.
