The Battle of Tannenberg was a decisive engagement fought in August 1914 between the German and Russian Empires during the first month of World War I. It resulted in a crushing German victory, almost completely destroying the Russian Second Army and establishing the legendary reputations of German commanders Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff.
