The Andes virus (ANDV) is a dangerous pathogen primarily found in South America, transmitted to humans mainly by infected rodents. It causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory illness with a high fatality rate. Uniquely among hantaviruses, ANDV can also spread from person to person.
